The summer of 2015 marked a significant milestone for me as I attended the European Group for Organizational Studies (EGOS) annual conference in Athens, Greece. This trip was especially meaningful because I brought my daughter along, allowing us to explore the rich history and vibrant culture of Athens together. Athens had always been on my bucket list, and sharing this experience with my daughter made it even more special.

Our adventure began with visits to the major historical sites in and around Athens. We marveled at the grandeur of the Acropolis, where the Parthenon stands as a testament to ancient Greek architectural genius. Walking through the ancient ruins, we felt a profound connection to the past and the enduring legacy of Greek civilization. The Acropolis Museum further enriched our understanding of this remarkable site, with its vast collection of artifacts and informative exhibits.

We also explored the ancient Agora, the heart of public life in ancient Athens. Wandering through the remains of this bustling marketplace, we could almost hear the echoes of philosophers, merchants, and citizens who once thrived here. The Temple of Hephaestus, one of the best-preserved ancient Greek temples, stood majestically amidst the ruins, offering a glimpse into the architectural prowess of the time.

Our journey took us beyond the city limits as we traveled down the picturesque coast to the Temple of Poseidon at Cape Sounion. The temple, perched high on a cliff overlooking the Aegean Sea, provided breathtaking views and a sense of tranquility. According to legend, it was here that sailors would make offerings to Poseidon, the god of the sea, seeking his protection for their voyages. The temple’s dramatic setting and historical significance made it a highlight of our trip.

In addition to our historical explorations, we immersed ourselves in the vibrant culture and cuisine of Athens. We savored traditional Greek dishes, from succulent souvlaki to creamy moussaka, and indulged in sweet treats like baklava. The bustling Plaka district, with its narrow streets and charming tavernas, became our favorite spot to unwind and soak in the local atmosphere.

One of the more unique experiences was running up the steps at the Panathenaic Stadium, the site of the first modern Olympic Games in 1896. The stadium, built entirely of marble, exuded a sense of grandeur and athletic history. Running up those steps, even for a brief moment, made us feel connected to the legacy of the Olympic spirit.

Despite the many wonderful experiences, our trip was not without its challenges. On the last day, my wallet was stolen, which put a damper on an otherwise fantastic journey. Navigating the aftermath of the theft was stressful, but it didn’t overshadow the incredible memories we had created.

Overall, our trip to Athens was a remarkable blend of professional engagement and personal exploration. Attending the EGOS conference provided valuable insights and networking opportunities, while exploring Athens with my daughter allowed us to bond over shared experiences and discoveries. From the ancient ruins and coastal temples to the delectable food and lively streets, Athens left an indelible mark on both of us. Despite the minor setback, it was a great trip, filled with unforgettable moments and a deeper appreciation for the rich tapestry of Greek history and culture.
