For our anniversary in 2016, my wife and I decided to celebrate with a memorable trip to San Jose, Costa Rica, focusing our visit in the center of the country. The vibrant capital city served as an excellent hub for our explorations, allowing us to experience both the natural beauty and cultural richness of Costa Rica.
Our base of operations was the charming Hotel Grano de Oro, a boutique hotel nestled in the heart of San Jose. We hiked through the park’s well-maintained trails, encountering playful monkeys, colorful birds, and even a few sloths lounging in the trees. The pristine beaches were the perfect spots to unwind and soak in the sun, with the turquoise waters of the Pacific Ocean providing a refreshing backdrop.
Another highlight of our trip was our visit to Poas Volcano, an active stratovolcano located in the Central Valley region. The drive up to the volcano was an adventure in itself, taking us through picturesque landscapes and quaint villages. At the top, we were greeted by the awe-inspiring sight of the volcano’s massive crater, filled with a striking blue-green crater lake. The geothermal activity and the sulfuric steam rising from the lake created a surreal and mesmerizing scene. We spent time exploring the surrounding national park, learning about the volcano’s history and the unique flora and fauna that thrive in this volcanic environment.
In addition to our excursions, we took time to explore San Jose itself. The city’s rich cultural heritage was evident in its historic architecture, bustling markets, and vibrant art scene. We visited the National Theater, an architectural gem that hosts a variety of performances and events. The Pre-Columbian Gold Museum offered fascinating insights into the region’s indigenous cultures and their artistry.
Throughout our trip, we enjoyed the delicious Costa Rican cuisine, with its emphasis on fresh, local ingredients. From hearty breakfasts featuring gallo pinto (a traditional rice and beans dish) to dinners of fresh seafood and tropical fruits, every meal was a delight.
Overall, our anniversary trip to Costa Rica was an unforgettable adventure.
