22. Nicaragua

For our anniversary in 2017, we decided to revisit the beautiful landscapes of Costa Rica for the second year in a row, this time flying into Liberia. Our stay was at the luxurious El Mangroove Hotel in the stunning Papagayo Peninsula, which served as our perfect retreat amidst the natural beauty of the region.

El Mangroove Hotel, with its modern design and tranquil ambiance, provided us with an exquisite base to explore the area. Nestled between lush mangroves and the serene coastline, the hotel offered us a unique blend of luxury and nature. We spent our mornings enjoying the breathtaking views of the Gulf of Papagayo and our evenings dining on gourmet cuisine by the beach.

One of the highlights of our trip was a day excursion to Granada, Nicaragua. This picturesque historic colonial town, with its colorful buildings and cobblestone streets, exuded old-world charm. After crossing the border, we were welcomed by the vibrant atmosphere of Granada. We enjoyed a delightful lunch at The Garden Cafe, a cozy spot known for its fresh and delicious fare. The cafe’s lush courtyard provided a relaxing setting for us to savor our meal before setting out to explore the town.

To fully immerse ourselves in Granada’s rich history, we toured the major parts of the town via horse-drawn carriage. This traditional mode of transport allowed us to leisurely take in the sights, including the grand Cathedral of Granada, the bustling central park, and the numerous colonial-era buildings that line the streets. The leisurely pace of the carriage ride gave us a sense of stepping back in time, enhancing our appreciation for the town’s cultural heritage.

On our way to Granada, we made an unforgettable stop at the Masaya Volcano, one of only eight locations in the world where you can witness molten lava inside a volcano. The sight of the glowing lava was both awe-inspiring and humbling, a powerful reminder of nature’s raw and untamed force. Standing at the edge of the crater, peering into the fiery depths, was an experience that will forever remain etched in our memories.

Back at El Mangroove, we enjoyed the hotel’s exceptional amenities, including its infinity pool, spa services, and private beach access. Each day was a perfect blend of adventure and relaxation, from exploring the vibrant streets of Granada to lounging in the tranquil surroundings of our hotel.

Our second trip to Costa Rica was as enchanting as the first, filled with new discoveries and cherished moments. The combination of El Mangroove’s luxurious hospitality, the cultural richness of Granada, and the awe-inspiring sight of Masaya Volcano made this journey truly unforgettable. As we reflected on our travels, we felt grateful for the opportunity to experience such diverse and captivating destinations together.
