While in the United Arab Emirates, I took a day trip to Oman and the Musandam Peninsula, a hidden gem known for its breathtaking natural beauty. Our journey led us to Khasab, Oman, where we boarded a traditional Dhow, a type of wooden boat historically used for trade in the Arabian Gulf. This picturesque vessel, captured in the photo above, took us on an unforgettable cruise through Khor Sham, a majestic fjord surrounded by spectacular mountains and serene, remote white sand beaches.

The Dhow anchored at two stunning locations during our cruise: Telegraph Island and Seebi Island. The ruins of Telegraph Island, also pictured above, hold a fascinating history. In the 19th century, this small island was the site of a British repeater station used to boost telegraph messages along the Persian Gulf submarine cable, which was part of the London to Karachi (Pakistan) communication line. Walking among the ruins, I could almost sense the historical significance and the isolation experienced by those who once manned the station.

Seebi Island, another stop on our cruise, offered a perfect spot for swimming in the azure waters of the Arabian Gulf. The clear, calm water was incredibly inviting, providing a refreshing break amid our exploration. The pristine beaches and tranquil surroundings made for an idyllic escape from the hustle and bustle of daily life.

As we cruised through Khor Sham, we passed several isolated fishing villages that are only accessible by boat. These small communities, nestled along the fjord’s edge, are remnants of a simpler, more traditional way of life. Although it was not the main fishing season and many locals were not in residence, seeing these villages gave us a glimpse into the unique lifestyle of the region’s fishermen.

The scenery throughout the Musandam Peninsula was nothing short of spectacular. The towering cliffs, rugged mountains, and crystal-clear waters combined to create a landscape that was both dramatic and serene. The natural beauty of the fjord, with its secluded beaches and pristine waters, made the trip to Khor Sham an unforgettable experience.

This day trip to Oman and the Musandam Peninsula added another layer of adventure to my time in the United Arab Emirates. The contrast between the ultra-modern cities of Dubai and Abu Dhabi and the untouched natural landscapes of Khor Sham highlighted the diverse experiences that the Arabian Peninsula has to offer. Whether it was exploring the ruins of Telegraph Island, swimming in the tranquil waters of Seebi Island, or simply enjoying the stunning views from the Dhow, every moment of this excursion was filled with wonder and discovery.
