Located just a short distance from the conference venue, the hotel was not only convenient but also offered a comfortable and luxurious retreat after a day full of sessions and networking. Walking through its grand lobby and enjoying the amenities provided an excellent balance between work and relaxation.

Exploring Washington, DC’s Culinary Scene

Washington, DC, is known for its vibrant culinary scene, and I made sure to savor some of the best it has to offer. One evening, I had dinner at Old Ebbitt Grill, a restaurant steeped in history. Established in 1856, it’s the oldest saloon in the city, and dining there felt like stepping back in time. The atmosphere was lively yet refined, and the menu offered a wide array of American classics. The oysters were a highlight, living up to the restaurant’s reputation among seafood lovers. The experience was more than just a meal—it was a connection to the tradition and legacy of Washington, DC, making it a must-visit for anyone exploring the city.

For lunch, I had the pleasure of dining at the Cosmos Club, an institution that exudes elegance and intellectual charm. Located on Embassy Row, the Cosmos Club has been a gathering place for leaders in various fields since its founding in 1878. The grand setting, with its beautifully appointed rooms and impressive library, fostered a sense of intellectual curiosity and thoughtful conversation. The meal was as exquisite as the company, making the visit a truly special experience.

Taking a break from the academic sessions, I attended a Nationals game. The energy in the stadium was contagious, and it was a great way to unwind and enjoy America’s favorite pastime. The game offered a perfect blend of excitement and relaxation, reminding me of the importance of balancing work with leisure.

Discovering the Charm of Lake Como and Bellagio

Nestled in the heart of Northern Italy, Lake Como is a destination that promises breathtaking beauty, rich history, and an unforgettable experience. My recent visit to Lake Como and the enchanting town of Bellagio left me captivated by their charm and elegance.

From the moment I arrived, Lake Como’s stunning landscape took my breath away. The lake, shaped like an inverted ‘Y’, is surrounded by majestic mountains and dotted with charming villages. The serene blue waters and lush greenery create a picturesque scene that feels almost too perfect to be real.

I started my journey in the town of Como, easily accessible by train from Milan. Como is a delightful introduction to the region, with its historic center, beautiful cathedral, and bustling waterfront. Strolling along the lakefront promenade, I soaked in the views and the vibrant atmosphere.

The Journey to Bellagio

To reach Bellagio, often referred to as the “Pearl of Lake Como,” I took a scenic ferry ride across the lake. The journey itself was a highlight, offering panoramic views of the lake and its surrounding villages. As the ferry approached Bellagio, the town’s beauty became evident, with its pastel-colored buildings and lush gardens cascading down the hillside.

Exploring Bellagio

Bellagio is a place where time seems to slow down. I spent my days wandering through its narrow cobblestone streets, discovering hidden gems around every corner. The town is filled with boutique shops, cozy cafes, and charming restaurants offering delicious Italian cuisine.

Another must-visit is the Punta Spartivento, the point where the three branches of Lake Como meet. From here, you can enjoy breathtaking views of the lake and the surrounding mountains.

A Taste of Italy

During my stay, I indulged in some delightful local cuisine. I enjoyed pizza with its perfectly crispy crust and rich toppings, and I savored the classic Italian dish of prosciutto with melon. The combination of the salty prosciutto and the sweet, juicy melon was simply divine, providing a true taste of Italian culinary tradition.

A Touch of Hollywood

Lake Como has also served as the backdrop for various films, adding a touch of glamour to its natural beauty. One of the highlights of my visit was seeing the villa where scenes from the James Bond movie “Casino Royale” were filmed. Villa del Balbianello, with its stunning architecture and panoramic views of the lake, was instantly recognizable and added an exciting element to my trip.

July 2024 Cafe de Paris in Monaco

A Delightful Dining Experience at Café de Paris, Monaco

During my recent trip to Monaco, I had the pleasure of dining at the renowned Café de Paris, located just steps away from the iconic Casino de Monte-Carlo. The experience was nothing short of spectacular, combining classic French cuisine with a vibrant atmosphere.

I started my meal with a bowl of French onion soup. The rich, savory broth, topped with cheese and bread (almost like a croque monsier), was the perfect comfort food to begin the evening. The depth of flavor in the soup was a testament to the culinary expertise of the chefs.

For the main course, I indulged in linguine with clams. The pasta was cooked to perfection, and the clams were fresh and tender. The light garlic and white wine sauce complemented the dish beautifully, making each bite a delightful experience.

To end the meal on a sweet note, I chose the famous Crêpe Suzette. This classic French dessert, prepared tableside, was a visual and gustatory treat. The thin, delicate crepes were flambéed with orange liqueur, creating a zesty and slightly caramelized sauce that was simply divine.

July 2023 Cagliari, Sardinia

Sardinia is indeed known for its distinct culture and cuisine, which sets it apart from mainland Italy. It’s fascinating to explore the narrow streets and alleys of the old town, as they showcase the island’s rich history and charm. The traditional Sardinian dishes, such as Fregula with meat sauce, Spaghetti a la Vongole, and Pecorino cheese, are all popular and delicious choices. Sardinian cuisine often incorporates local ingredients and flavors, offering a unique twist on Italian dishes.

Cagliari, the capital city of Sardinia, offers a variety of attractions and sites to explore. Here are some of the main ones:

Cagliari Old Town (Castello): This historic district is located on a hill and is characterized by narrow streets, medieval architecture, and panoramic views of the city and the sea. It’s a great place to wander around, visit the Cagliari Cathedral (Duomo di Cagliari), explore the old city walls, and enjoy the atmosphere of the ancient streets.

The food at Merchant’s Arch, Kytellers Inn and The Reg were especially noteworthy. We now need to learn how to cook Pot Roast Chicken (The Reg).

March 2023 Washington DC

In early March, we took a brief excursion to Washington, DC. Since we had recently become non-resident members of the Army and Navy Club, we wanted to pay the club a visit and stay for a few days. During our stay, we had the opportunity to tour the White House and Ford’s Theater, as well as a couple of the Smithsonian Museums. Our dining experiences included meals at the Army and Navy Club, our go-to spot Old Ebbitt Grill, as well as Off the Record Bar (Hay Adams Hotel) and Round Robin Bar (Willard Hotel). Washington DC has always been one of my favorite US cities.

The Old Ebbitt Grill is a historic restaurant located in Washington D.C. near the White House. It first opened its doors in 1856 and has been in operation continuously since then, making it one of the oldest restaurants in the city.

The restaurant is decorated with historic memorabilia, including political cartoons and photographs, which gives it a unique and nostalgic atmosphere. It’s said that Presidents Grant, Cleveland, Harding, and Theodore Roosevelt were all patrons of the restaurant during their time in office.

The Off the Record Bar is a popular bar located inside the Hay-Adams Hotel in Washington D.C. The bar is known for its classic cocktails and upscale atmosphere, as well as its reputation as a spot for political insiders and journalists to gather and have off-the-record conversations.

The bar is decorated with political cartoons and caricatures, giving it a unique and quirky vibe. It’s often referred to as a “hidden gem” due to its discreet location and intimate setting.

The Round Robin Bar is a historic bar located inside the Willard InterContinental Hotel in Washington D.C. The bar has been a fixture in the city for over a century and is known for its classic cocktails, upscale ambiance, and famous clientele.

The Round Robin Bar has been frequented by numerous famous guests over the years, including politicians, diplomats, and celebrities. It’s said that President Abraham Lincoln used to frequent the bar during the Civil War and that the term “lobbyist” was coined in the bar’s early days when political advocates would wait in the lobby to talk to members of Congress who were also patrons of the bar.
